Why in the news?

As the CISF assumes security responsibilities in most areas of Parliament, concerns arise regarding the fate of the unarmed Parliament Security Service (PSS) unit, in operation since 1950.

About the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF):

  • Established after Justice Mukherjee Commission’s recommendation, CISF was founded by an Act of Parliament on March 10, 1969.
  • CISF is one of seven CAPFs under the Ministry of Home Affairs, led by an IPS officer as Director-General.
  • Its mandate expanded in 2009 to include protecting joint-ventures and private undertakings, offering consultancy services, and securing various critical installations nationwide.

About The Parliament Security Service:

  • The Parliament Security Service oversees security at the Parliament House Complex, collaborating with various security agencies.
  • It coordinates security during presidential elections, ensuring safe transportation of ballot boxes and their custody until the election process concludes.
  • The service facilitates cooperation between agencies like the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, Delhi Police, and Airport Security for election-related tasks.
