CENTRE MANDATES UNIQUE IDS FOR ORGAN DONATION TO CURB MALPRACTICE.
Why in the news?
Organ donation regulation changes: Unique IDs mandated for organ transplants to prevent commercial dealings, especially involving foreign citizens.
About the Unique ID for Organ Donation:
- NOTTO-ID Allocation: All organ transplant cases, whether from living or deceased donors, will receive a unique National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO)-ID for both donor and recipient.
- Generation Process: Hospitals must generate this ID from the NOTTO website (www.notto.mohfw.gov.in) to curb commercial organ dealings, particularly involving foreign citizens.
- Ministry’s Directive: The Union Health Ministry issued the directive to all States and Union Territories to tighten monitoring and eliminate malpractice amid a surge in organ transplants related to foreigners, emphasising stricter scrutiny by local authorities.
