Why in the News?

  • Lok Sabha recently passed the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Bill, 2023.

Key Provisions and Amendments:

  • The bill establishes a search committee headed by the Law Minister to shortlist candidates for CEC and ECs.
  • The bill establishes a panel consisting of the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and a Cabinet Minister proposed by the PM for appointments.
  • In the absence of a Leader of the Opposition, the leader of the single largest Opposition party in Lok Sabha is choosen.
  • The selection panel, with enhanced powers, can consider candidates not shortlisted by the search committee.
  • Amendments include equal salary to Supreme Court judges, protection from court cases during official duties, and removal procedures ensuring independence.
