Alignment with Supreme Court Direction:
- Union Law Minister stated that the bill adheres to the Supreme Court’s direction.
- The court directed a three-member panel, headed by the PM, to select CEC and ECs until a law is enacted.
Key Provisions and Amendments:
- The bill establishes a search committee headed by the Law Minister to shortlist candidates for CEC and ECs.
- The bill establishes a panel consisting of the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and a Cabinet Minister proposed by the PM for appointments.
- In the absence of a Leader of the Opposition, the leader of the single largest Opposition party in Lok Sabha is choosen.
- The selection panel, with enhanced powers, can consider candidates not shortlisted by the search committee.
- Amendments include equal salary to Supreme Court judges, protection from court cases during official duties, and removal procedures ensuring independence.
