Cabinet Approves ₹2,000 Crore Mission Mausam Initiative

Why in the news?

The Union Cabinet approved ‘Mission Mausam’ to enhance India’s weather forecasting, research, and climate resilience, focusing on advanced technologies and benefiting multiple sectors across the country.

Highlights of the initiative :

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved ‘Mission Mausam‘ with a budget of ₹2,000 crore over two years.
  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences will oversee implementation, aimed at boosting India’s weather and climate research, forecasting, and resilience to climate change.
  • The mission will incorporate advanced technologies like  AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing for accurate weather predictions.

Key Focus Areas and Technologies

  • Mission Mausam will include next-generation radars, advanced satellite systems, and improved Earth system models.
  • It will enhance weather monitoring, cyclone alerts, monsoon forecasts, and extreme weather management (fog, hail, and rain).
  • A GIS-based automated Decision Support System will provide real-time data dissemination, aiding faster decision-making.

Sectoral Benefits and Implementation

  • The mission will benefit agriculture, disaster management, defence, aviation, water resources, tourism, shipping, and health sectors.
  • It will enhance data-driven decisions in urban planning, transport, and environmental monitoring.
  • Three key institutes—the India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting—will implement the mission, supported by other national and international agencies.

About Project ‘Mausam’:

  • Focuses on monsoon patterns, cultural routes, and maritime landscapes across the Indian Ocean.
  • Examines key processes that link coastal centres with their hinterlands.

Aims:

  • Understand how monsoon winds influenced interactions, knowledge exchange, and traditions across the Indian Ocean.
  • Macro level: Reconnect countries in the Indian Ocean world to enhance cultural understanding.
  • Micro level: Explore national cultures in their maritime context.
  • Activities: India aims to revive cultural and economic ties with 39 Indian Ocean countries.

Initiatives include a lecture series and an international conference in 2015.
