About Implementation of CAA Rules:
- After four years, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notified rules to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on March 11.
- These rules expedite citizenship for undocumented immigrants from six non-Muslim communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
- Several petitioners have challenged the CAA’s constitutionality in the Supreme Court and sought a stay on the implementation of the rules.
About the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA):
● The CAA, passed in December 2019, amends the Citizenship Act of 1955, allowing undocumented immigrants up to December 31, 2014, eligibility for citizenship. ● It raises concerns about potential discrimination against Muslims, especially in conjunction with the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC). |
