Why in the news?

  • Bhil tribal community demands a separate state, “Bhil Pradesh,” carving out 49 districts from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
  • The demand was highlighted at a “maha sammelan” in Mangarh Dham, Rajasthan on July 18.
  • Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), formed by first-time MP R. K. Roat, champions this cause after its recent success in Lok Sabha polls.

About Bhil Community:

  • Geographic Spread: Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
  • Name Origin: Derived from “billu” meaning bow.
  • Skills: Excellent archers, guerrilla warfare experts, farmers, agricultural labourers, skilled sculptors.
  • Traditional Attire: Women wear saris with heavy silver and brass ornaments; men wear long frocks and pyjamas.
