What is ‘Republic Day’?

  • Independence Day is observed on August 15, 1947, the day India gained its independence and Republic Day commemorates the day India became an independent republic and obtained a written constitution;
  • The word “Republic” denotes that the President of India is an elected official;
  • Reason for adoption January 26 as Republic Day? January 26th was designated as Republic Day because it was on this day in 1930 that the Indian National Congress (INC) proclaimed Indian independence from the British rule, or Purna Swaraj. The Purna Swaraj resolution was approved in December 1929 at the INC session in Lahore and Shree Jawaharlal Nehru presided over the meeting;
  • Republic Day Celebration: Republic Day is celebrated through the main event of Republic Day Parade and the unfurling of the national flag. The following are some of the parade’s main highlights:
    • Indian Army and Paramilitary Forces contingents marching;
    • “Dare Devils” perform motorcycle stunts;
    • Vibrant tableaux representing various Indian states and union territories, as well as government departments and ministries. Folk dance troupes from different states;
    • The parade culminates in a captivating fly-past featuring multiple Indian Air Force aircraft.
    • Post-Parade Events: Presentation of the Padma and Gallantry Awards by the President and beating retreat ceremony and conclusion.
  • Theme of the 75th Republic Day 2024: ‘Viksit Bharat’ and ‘Bharat – Loktantra ki Matruka.’

About Republic Day Parade Tableau Selection

  • For the States and Union Territories (UTs) to display their tableaux in the Republic Day Parade, the Ministry of Defence had suggested a rollover plan;
  • It follows criticism from a few state governments against the union government for denying them participation in the Republic Day Parade Tableaux in 2024.
  • Participants in the Republic Day Parade 2024:
    • 16 states and union territories—Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh—have been chosen to participate in the 2024 Republic Day Parade;
    • The states and Union Territories that are not chosen for the Republic Day parade are allowed to display their tableaux at the Bharat Parv, according to a MoD provision;
  • Bharat Parv: As part of the Republic Day celebrations, the Indian government hosts the massive six-day event “Bharat Parv” from January 26 to January 31and Red Fort is the venue for this alternate event;
  • Rotational System of Tableaux:
    • In order to guarantee that every State and Union Territory has a chance to showcase their tableaux at the Republic Day parade during a three-year cycle, the government has completed a rotating plan (2024–2026);
    • The rotational system, which was approved by 28 States, aims to give every region equal opportunity, reducing allegations of political bias and promoting a more inclusive celebration.
  • How Are Tableaux Selected?
    • The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is in charge of organizing the parade and working with other agencies and states to make the necessary arrangements;
    • Given the artistic and cultural significance of the tableaus, the Ministry of Culture works in tandem with the MoD during the selection process to support the assessment and promotion of cultural displays;
    • The Ministry of Defense (MoD) forms an expert committee to review proposals and choose the tableaux of 16 States and Union Territories for the 2024 parade;
    • The committee is made up of well-known artists who were recommended by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA);
    • A total of four rounds of meetings are held before the tableaux were chosen and experts review these before making the final choice.
  • NOTE: Writing or using logos on the tableaux is not permitted, with the exception of the name of the State/UT presenting, which can be in Hindi in the front, English in the back, and the regional language on the sides of the tableau.
