News

• The longest bridge in India, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri – Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, January 12, 2024.
• This bridge is a significant infrastructure project for Mumbai. The bridge, spanning 21.8 km, is also the nation’s longest maritime bridge.
• In December 2016, the PM had placed the Atal Setu foundation stone.
• Other inauguration projects:
  • Phase 2 of the Uran-Kharkopar railway line,;
  • The opening of the first phase of the Surya regional bulk drinking water project;
  • The construction of the underground road tunnel connecting Eastern Freeway’s Orange Gate to Marine Drive, and;
  • The opening of the new suburban station “Digha Gaon” on the Trans-harbour line.

About The Bridge

• Enhancing connectivity throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Area—which includes Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad—is the goal of Atal Setu.
• The bridge originates from Sewri in Mumbai and ends at Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka in Raigad district and will shorten the two-hour journey time.
• Eighty percent of the project’s total cost is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with the remaining twenty percent being split between the federal and state governments.
• The path from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and the rest of South India is also shortened. In addition to improving connectivity between the Mumbai Port and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, it will offer a quicker route from both the Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
• The 6-lane bridge is the longest in India overall and the longest sea bridge, spanning 16.5 km over the sea and roughly 5.5 km on land.
