ANDHRA PRADESH NEEDS MORE THAN SPECIAL CATEGORY STATUS

Why in the news?

  • Chandrababu Naidu accused YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy of leaving Andhra Pradesh in a poor economic state.
  • Met with Prime Minister Modi and six Union Ministers with demands for Andhra Pradesh.
  • Requested short-term financial support and assistance for Polavaram irrigation project.

States with Special Category Status (SCS):

  • 11 states: Assam, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Uttarakhand, Telangana.
  • Telangana granted SCS due to its creation from Andhra Pradesh.
  • Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha are also demanding SCS.

About Special Category Status (SCS):

  • Classification to aid states with geographical and socio-economic disadvantages.
  • Introduced in 1969, first given to Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and Nagaland.
  • The 14th Finance Commission retained SCS for Northeastern and three hill states.
  • SCS addresses economic/financial issues, differing from Special Status.
