ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS SEEK GI REGISTRATION FOR SEVEN PRODUCTS
Why in the news ?
Andaman and Nicobar Islands pursue GI registration for seven indigenous products, with officials meeting for consultations and filing applications.
About the Visit by Intellectual Property Rights Officials:
Professor Unnat P. Pandit and Dr. Rajani Kant visited the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for a Consultative Group Meeting on Intellectual Property Rights.
They met Admiral DK Joshi, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of A&N Islands, to discuss the initiative on April 29th, 2024.
Applications for Geographical Indication (GI) Registration have been filed for seven indigenous products.
These products are the Nicobari Hut, Nicobari Mat, Nicobari Hodi, Virgin Coconut Oil, Andaman Tall Coconut, Andaman & Nicobar Padauk Furniture, and Andaman Karen Musley Rice.

About the Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
Location: Union territory of India, comprising 572 islands at the junction of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
Groups: Andaman Islands (partly) and Nicobar Islands, separated by Ten Degree Channel.
Geography: Submerged extension of Arakan Mountains; divided into North, Middle, and South Andaman Islands.
Capital: Port Blair located in South Andaman; Duncan Passage separates Little Andaman.
