Amit shah launches key Cybercrime initiatives in Delhi
Why in the news?
- Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, will address the first Foundation Day of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) in New Delhi.
- He will introduce key initiatives to combat cybercrime and inaugurate the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC).
About the Launch of Cybercrime Protection Initiatives:
- Samanvaya: A web-based platform for data sharing, mapping, analytics, and coordination for law enforcement agencies.
- Cyber Commandos: A specialised cybersecurity wing of trained personnel in states, UTs, and central police organisations.
- Suspect Registry: A new initiative to create a fraud risk management registry in collaboration with banks and financial intermediaries.
Establishment of CFMC and I4C
- The CFMC was created within I4C to bring together key financial, telecom, IT intermediaries, and law enforcement agencies.
- I4C was established in October 2018 under the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Cyber and Information Security Division to strengthen national cybersecurity.
About Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C):
- Approved in 2018 to combat cybercrime comprehensively in India.
- Operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Located in New Delhi.
Functions:
- Acts as a nodal point in fighting cybercrime.
- Facilitates R&D for new technologies and forensic tools.
- Prevents misuse of cyberspace by extremist/terrorist groups.
- Suggests amendments in cyber laws.
- Coordinates implementation of Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLAT) for cybercrimes.
- Comprises seven components including:
○ National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit.
○ National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
○ National Cybercrime Forensic Laboratory Ecosystem.
