Ambubachi Mela
News: Recently, security measures were put in place for pilgrims and visitors travelling to the Kamakhya temple for the Ambubachi Mela.
The venerable Kamakhya Temple hosts the yearly Hindu exhibition known as Ambubachi Mela.
It is observed around the middle of June, during the Assamese month of Ahaar, which also happens to be the monsoon season.
The goddess Maa Kamakhya’s yearly menstrual cycle is being celebrated.
Due to its intimate ties to the Tantric Shakti worship that is widespread in eastern India, this mela is also known as the Ameti or Tantric fertility festival.
Temple of Kamakhya:
It is one of the most revered places of Tantric practises and is located in Guwahati next to the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River on Nilachal Hill.
It is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India that is the oldest.
