News
- From the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile.
- The flight test was carried out at very low altitude against a fast-moving unmanned aerial target.
- The weapon system successfully intercepted and destroyed the target during the flight test.
- The entire weapon system, which includes the missile with the locally developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar, and Command, Control, and Communication system, has been verified to be operational.
- Modern missile systems like the AKASH-NG system can intercept swift and agile aerial threats.
Akash Missile (Akash-NG)
- This missile is surface-to-air. This is a new version of the Akash missile that can travel up to Mach 2.5 and hit targets up to 60 km away.
- It will enhance the capacity of Indian Air Force once it is put into service.
- Creation & Manufacturing:
- Developed in association with other DRDO laboratories by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad;
- Produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
- Akash Missile:
- With the ability to engage multiple targets from multiple directions, the Akash is India’s first domestically manufactured medium-range Surface to Air missile.
- The missile’s ability to be fired from mobile platforms like battle tanks or wheeled trucks makes it special. Its probability of killing is almost 90%.
- The missile is aided by the “Rajendra” radar, which was developed domestically.
- Thanks to its advanced radars and solid-fuel technology, the missile is said to be more accurate and less expensive than US Patriot missiles.
- It can detect and destroy targets flying at low, medium, and high altitudes. It can engage targets at a speed of 2.5 times the speed of sound.
- The Akash missile system has been designed and developed as part of India’s 30-year-old Integrated Guided-Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
