About the AIIMS Study on HPV Testing Kits:

AIIMS, Delhi, launches a study to validate indigenous HPV testing kits for cervical cancer screening.
The study aims to assess the accuracy of these kits across multiple study centres with global samples.
Led by Prof Neerja Bhatla, the project will begin by analysing 1,200 samples from France.
Testing will be performed at AIIMS, New Delhi, NICPR Noida, and ICMR-Mumbai.
The study will evaluate the efficacy of HPV screening kits as per international quality standards.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Develops in the cervix, ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer in women globally.
Predominantly caused by infection with high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV), usually transmitted through sexual contact.

About HPV vaccination:

Persistent high-risk HPV infection, low socioeconomic status, and smoking are major factors leading to cervical cancer.
HPV vaccination, screening, and timely treatment aid in early detection and prevention of the disease.

Types of HPV Strains:

Persistent infection with certain high-risk HPV strains accounts for nearly 85% of all cervical cancers.
About 14 HPV types are oncogenic, with types 16 and 18 being the most significant, responsible for approximately 70% of cases worldwide.
