Context: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced on that residents would be able to change their address on Aadhaar card by having the head of family second their request.

  • Any Person above the age of 18 can act as a head of family, and can update the address on the card for a relative he/she lives with.
  • He/she need to provide only a proof of their relationship, such as marriage certificate, passport, birth certificate, or ration card.

What is Aadhaar?

  • Aadhaar is a twelve digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India. The UIDAI number serves as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India.
  • Any Person, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhaar.
  • Aadhaar Enables identification for every resident Indian and establishes uniqueness of every individual on the basis of demographic and biometric information
  • Aadhar is a voluntary service that every resident can avail irrespective of present documentation
  • Aadhaar provide a universal identity infrastructure which can be used by any identity-based application like ration card, passport etc.

Uses of Aadhaar

  • The Aadhaar system allows mobility to millions of people who migrate from one part of the country to another by providing a portable proof of identity that can be verified.
  • Aadhaar and its platform offers opportunity to the government to streamline their delivery mechanism under the welfare schemes, thereby ensuring transparency and efficiency.
  • Aadhaar penetration enables elimination of duplicates under various schemes which leads to substantial savings to the government exchequers.
  • It also provides the government with accurate data on the beneficiaries and allow effective implementation of direct benefit transfer (DBT) programmes.

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)

  • The UIDAI India is a statutory authority established under the provisions of Aadhaar act 2016 by the Govt. of India under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • The main task of the organisation is to develop policy, procedure and system for issuing Aadhaar number to residents of India.
