Explain the features of Remote Sensing Satellites and the areas of its use.

Introduction:

Remote sensing can be defined as a technology of acquiring data without making the physical contact with the object. It is a technology which is in contrast to the on-site observation of the data. It is applied to Earth and other planets also. It has a wide variety of uses and is being augmented with other technologies to get better results.

Body:

In specific terms, remote sensing uses satellites to identify and classify various targets. For example an agricultural field will be identified and the different aspects of it such as soil, crop pattern etc will be identified. Later, the data will be processed and suitable conclusions will be drawn such as the steps to maximize the yield.

The practical applications include

  • Air-traffic control, warning systems in meterology, law enforcement such as detection of speed & monitoring.
  • Measuring sea levels using ultrasound acoustics
  • Light Detection and Ranging is used in sensing chemicals, weapon ranging
  • Monitoring volcanoes
  • Spectral Imaging of objects
  • Monitor environmental risks
  • Sensing of the population using radiometers and photometers.

Conclusion:

Due to wide variety of its applications, it is a major technology which is used by almost all the countries in the world in one or the other way. Since its inception a number of technological advancements have also taken place thus increasing its usage.
