INS MAHENDRAGIRI (F38) COMMISSIONED INTO THE INDIAN NAVY

Why in the News?

  • Major Naval Induction: The Indian Navy has commissioned its sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate, INS Mahendragiri (F38), into the Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam.
  • Aatmanirbhar Milestone: The induction strengthens India’s indigenous warship-building capability, enhances maritime security, and advances the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing.

PROJECT 17A STEALTH FRIGATE

  • Indigenous Warship: INS Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
  • Advanced Combat Capability: The frigate is equipped with advanced indigenous weapons, sensors, electronic warfare suites, integrated combat management systems, and surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine weapon systems.
  • Stealth Features: It incorporates low radar signature, enhanced survivability, reduced acoustic and infrared signatures, and a high degree of automation to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Multi-Role Operations: The warship is capable of anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine warfare, maritime security patrols, intelligence gathering, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief (HADR), and sustained deployments.
  • Indigenisation: With over 75% indigenous content, the project strengthens India’s defence industrial ecosystem by promoting domestic industries, MSMEs, and advanced defence technologies.

SIGNIFICANCE FOR INDIA’S MARITIME SECURITY

  • Force Multiplier: INS Mahendragiri significantly enhances the Indian Navy’s combat readiness and strengthens India’s capability to address conventional and non-conventional maritime threats in the context of evolving strategic competition.
  • Indian Ocean Security: The frigate supports India’s role as a net security provider and a key guarantor of peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), contributing to the broader Indo-Pacific strategy and regional security architecture.
  • Blue Water Capability: Modern stealth frigates improve India’s ability to undertake long-range deployments, maritime surveillance, power projection, and expeditionary operations across the Indo-Pacific region, addressing strategic competition from major powers including US and China.
  • Defence Self-Reliance: The project demonstrates India’s progress in indigenous warship design, construction, and defence manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while strengthening defense cooperation agreements with partner nations.
  • Strategic Vision: The induction aligns with national initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, Maritime India Vision, and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), reinforcing India’s Indo-Pacific strategy and strategic alignment with like-minded nations.

PROJECT 17A

Project Overview: Project 17A is the follow-on programme to Project 17 (Shivalik-class) for constructing seven advanced stealth-guided missile frigates for the Indian Navy.

Shipyards: The vessels are being constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, using Integrated Construction techniques.

Key Features: Project 17A frigates incorporate stealth technology, advanced sensors, network-centric warfare capability, integrated platform management systems, and modern propulsion systems for multi-dimensional naval operations.

Strategic Importance: These frigates strengthen India’s ability to secure Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs), protect maritime trade and regional economic integration, counter piracy and submarine threats, and enhance deterrence in the Indo-Pacific through a cooperative security framework that respects ASEAN centrality and the rules-based international order, while advancing the Quad partnership and promoting economic interdependence among regional partners.

UPSC Relevance: Important for GS Paper III (Defence Technology, Internal Security, Infrastructure), GS Paper II (International Relations – Indo-Pacific), and Prelims covering Project 17A, MDL, GRSE, SAGAR, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Indian Ocean Region (IOR), Indo-Pacific strategy, and indigenous defence manufacturing.
