UNIFIL’s Mandate and Israel’s Aggression in Lebanon
Why in the news?
The Israeli Defense Forces violated international law by demolishing a UNIFIL observation tower, sparking tensions and Israel’s demand for UNIFIL’s removal from the Blue Line region.
UNIFIL and its Mandate in Lebanon:
- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established after Israel’s 1978 invasion of southern Lebanon, aimed at expelling Palestinian armed groups.
- UNIFIL’s mission includes ensuring Israeli withdrawal, restoring peace and security, and helping Lebanon regain control over the southern region, as per UN Security Council Resolutions 425, 426, and later 1701.
- The 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah led to UNIFIL’s expanded mandate, focusing on disarmament and providing humanitarian aid.
Israel’s Aggression and International Law:
- Recently, Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) bulldozed a UNIFIL observation tower, violating international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
- Israel has called for UNIFIL to vacate positions along the Blue Line, a demarcation set in 2000 between Israel and Lebanon.
- Attacks on UN peacekeepers breach international norms, but Israel’s government, under Prime Minister Netanyahu, continues to demand the removal of UNIFIL forces.
India’s Contribution to UNIFIL:
- India is a major contributor to UNIFIL, with 903 personnel as of October 2024, serving alongside Indonesia and Italy.
- The Indian battalion (INDBATT) has been involved in community outreach, building parks and stadiums, and providing medical assistance.
- Despite Israel’s criticism of UNIFIL, the peacekeepers’ mandate is to provide assistance, not engage in combat, with the Lebanese army responsible for the area’s defence.
