Why in the news?

India and the UAE signed their first civil nuclear cooperation MoU during Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed’s visit, enhancing collaboration in nuclear energy and LNG supply.

About the India and UAE Sign MoU for Civil Nuclear Cooperation:

  • India and the UAE signed a landmark MoU for civil nuclear cooperation, the first of its kind between the two nations.
  • The agreement was signed during the visit of Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to New Delhi.
  • The pact is between India’s Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) and the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, led by Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC).

Trilateral Cooperation and Diplomatic Discussions:

  • The MoU follows years of nuclear-related discussions, including a 2022 meeting in New York between the foreign ministers of India, France, and the UAE.
  • This trilateral cooperation aims to promote projects in solar and nuclear energy.
  • The agreement strengthens UAE’s investment in nuclear energy as part of its expansion policy.

Other Agreements During Crown Prince’s Visit:

  • India and the UAE also signed an MoU for long-term LNG supply between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
  • Additional agreements included partnerships in energy production and food park development in Gujarat.
  • The visit coincided with the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council meeting held in Saudi Arabia.
