DHULIKHEL DECLARED AS NEPAL’S FIRST ‘HEALTHY CITY’ BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

Why in the news?

  • Currently, WHO has officially inaugurated Dhulikhel Municipality in Kavrepalanchok district as the first ‘‘healthy city’’ of the country.
  • Dhulikhel also stands as the second health city of Asia for which it has been aspiring since 2014 based on health promoting activities.

WHO Evaluation and Recognition:

  • Health promotion initiatives of Dhulikhel Municipality towards making their city healthy has been observed by WHO from 2021.
  • Fighting child obesity, the city was rated 65 percent,50 percent on WHO’s measure of healthy cities that entails health, population’s involvement in the policy-making process, political will, nutrition, children’s health, and creativity in other health initiatives.
  • Currently Dhulikhel is a member of the WHO Healthy City Network which means it has been granted with USD 5,000 to sustain further health promotion.
  • This is now when Nepal is known to be the third most polluted country according to the PM 2.5 data of satellite observation.
About Dhulikhel Municipality:

  • Dhulikhel is one of the municipalities in Kavrepalanchok district of Nepal and it is 30 km southeast of Kathmandu.
  • It is located at 1,550 metres altitude on the Eastern end of the Kathmandu Valley.
  • Dhulikhel is located on Arniko Highway and B. P. Highway both which connects Kathmandu to Kodari, the border town of Tibet.
  • The population is predominantly of the Newar origin and only a proportion are of Brahmin, Chhettri, Tamang and Dalit origin in the outskirts .
  • Dhulikhel also has quality drinking water which has been developed assisted by the German NGO German Technical Cooperation.
