Why in the News?

The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary. Located between Sultanganj To Kahalgaon  in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, is India’s only dolphin sanctuary dedicated to protecting the endangered Ganga River Dolphin.

ABOUT THE VIKRAMSHILA GANGETIC DOLPHIN SANCTUARY :

Established in 1991, it spans approximately 50 km along the Ganga River. The sanctuary provides a vital habitat for dolphins and all the other aquatic species and plays a very important, a key role in conservation efforts and addressing challenges which could be pollution as well as illegal fishing. The sanctuary plays a pivotal role also in the conservation and the National Dolphin Research Centre that is present in Patna.
