Why in the News?
The Indus water treaty 1960 brokered by the World Bank allocates the Indus rivers water between India and Pakistan. India controls the eastern Rivers Beas, Chenab and Ravi when Pakistan manages the Western rivers Indus, Jhelum, Sutlej.

About THE INDUS WATER TREATY :
The treaty with provisions for dispute resolution and construction projects remains one of the world’s most successful water sharing agreements. The Indus River originating in the Tibetan plateau near Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar flows through Ladakh the Gilgit Balistan region of Pakistan occupied Kashmir that is a POK region and Pakistan before emptying into the Arabian Sea near Karachi.
Its major tributaries include the Zanskar, Shyok, Gilgit, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and the Sutlej rivers. Central to the ancient Indus valley civilization with major sites like Harappa and Mohenjo Daro the Indus River is the national River of Pakistan.
