Why in the news?

  • Goans escaped forced labour in Cambodia, where they were exploited for cryptocurrency fraud. The Indian Embassy facilitated their rescue.
  • A 26-year-old ran 2 km to the Indian Embassy after two months of forced labour; a 25-year-old faked illness to escape the same compound.
  • Over 5,000 Indians were trapped in Cambodia, forced into cryptocurrency fraud.
  • Scammers deceived people in India of over Rs 500 crore. The Indian government has intervened to rescue victims.
