INDIA’S SDG SCORES IMPROVE, KERALA AND UTTARAKHAND LEAD

Why in the news?

  • Kerala and Uttarakhand secured the highest scores (79 each) in NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023-24.
  • India’s SDG score improved to 71 in 2023-24 from 66 in 2020-21, driven by progress in poverty reduction, economic growth, and climate action.
  • Bihar had the lowest score at 57 points, followed by Jharkhand with 62 points.

About NITI Aayog’s SDG Index:

  • Launched :in 2018 to monitor SDG progress and foster competition among States and UTs.
  • Oversees SDG adoption and promotes cooperative federalism.
  • Aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • Online dashboard available for cross-sectoral use.

Methodology:

  • Computes goal-wise scores (0–100) for 16 SDGs for each State/UT.
  • Higher scores indicate closer achievement of 2030 targets.
  • States/UTs categorised: Aspirant (0–49), Performer (50–64), Front-Runner (65–99), Achiever (100).

  • The 17 SDGs, established by the UN in 2015
  • Aim: to address social, economic, and environmental challenges globally.
  • They promote collective action, innovative approaches, and strong partnerships for a sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future by 2030.
