CHANGES IN NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL SECRETARIAT

Why in the news?

  • Rajinder Khanna, former RAW chief, has been promoted to Additional National Security Adviser (NSA), a newly created position.
  • Pavan Kapoor has been appointed Deputy NSA, signaling continuity and restructuring within the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

About National Security Council (NSC) of India

Establishment and Purpose

  • Established in 1998.
  • Advises the Prime Minister’s Office on national security and strategic interests.

Structure

  • Apex body of a 3-tiered national security management system.
  • Tiers include:
    • Strategic Policy Group
    • National Security Advisory Board
    • Secretariat from the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC)

Leadership

  • Presided over by the National Security Advisor (NSA).
  • NSA is the primary advisor to the Prime Minister on national security matters.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Senior official on the National Security Council.
