MINISTRY PLANS OVERHAUL OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCHEME

Why in the news?

  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs announced plans to revamp the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) to enhance its effectiveness and address shortcomings observed over nine years.

Revamp highlights:

  • Priority on reducing delays in benefit delivery.
  • Learning-based improvements for better implementation efficiency.
  • Supporting urban development: Introducing Special Assistance to States for faster infrastructure and planning enhancements.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Initiative:

PMAY aims to provide affordable housing through a credit-linked subsidy scheme.

Expansion:

Government approval for an additional 3 crore rural and urban houses under PMAY.

Components:

  • PMAY-U (Urban):

o   Objective: Ensure housing for all urban residents.

o   Beneficiaries: EWS, LIG, MIG.

o   Subsidies: Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme, In-Situ Slum Redevelopment, Affordable Housing in Partnership, Beneficiary-Led Construction.

  • PMAY-G (Gramin):

o   Objective: Provide pucca houses with basic amenities to rural families.

o   Beneficiaries: Identified via SECC 2011.

o   Features: Financial assistance, beneficiary-led construction, convergence with SBM and MGNREGA.
