NEW PROJECT TO ADDRESS WATER DEFICIT IN JAL JEEVAN MISSION

Why in the news?

The Union Jal Shakti Minister, announced a new project to ensure rural households with taps, installed under the Jal Jeevan Mission, receive potable water.
The announcement was made at a workshop organized for ministry officers, emphasizing a time-bound plan to cover all households with or without taps.

Current Situation

As of June 25, 77% of targeted households are covered, reaching 15 crore homes.
Despite progress, gaps remain in meeting the daily quota of 55 liters per person.

Jal Jeevan Mission

Nodal Ministry: Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under Jal Shakti Ministry.
Approach: Community-centric with focus on Information, Education, and Communication (IEC).
Funding Split: 50:50 between Centre and States; 90:10 for Himalayan and North-Eastern States; 100% by Central government for Union Territories.
Components: JJM Rural and JJM Urban.
Institutional Mechanism:

o National Jal Jeevan Mission

o State Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM)

o District Water and Sanitation Mission (DWSM)

o Paani Samiti/Village Water Sanitation Committee under Gram Panchayat.

Implementation: Paani Samitis with 10-15 members, at least 50% women, including SHG members, ASHA Workers, and Anganwadi teachers. They prepare a village action plan, approved by Gram Sabha.
