About Commando Battalions for Resolute Action (CoBRA)

Establishment and Role:

  • Founded in 2008, CoBRA is a specialized unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  • Known as “jungle warriors,” they are trained in guerrilla tactics and jungle warfare.

Primary Mission:

  • Originally created to counter Naxalite groups, they address insurgent activities using asymmetrical warfare.
  • CoBRA personnel are selected from the CRPF and undergo rigorous commando and jungle warfare training.

Deployment:

  • CoBRA has 10 units established between 2008 and 2011.
  • Most units operate in Maoist-affected areas, with some in the northeastern states for counter-insurgency operations.
About Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

Role and Authority:

  • Premier central police force for internal security in India.
  • Functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

History:

  • Constituted as the Crown Representative Police in 1939.
  • Became CRPF after the CRPF Act on 28th December 1949.
  • Established due to political unrest and agitations in princely states post-1936 Madras Resolution.
