TRAGIC DEATHS DUE TO SPURIOUS LIQUOR IN TAMIL NADU

Why in the news?

Nine people, including a woman, died after consuming spurious liquor in Karunapuram, Kallakurichi district.Six  died in Kallakurichi, three in Salem district.

About the News :

  • Previous Incidents:Last year, 22 people died in similar hooch tragedies in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.

  • Government Action:Chief Minister M.K. Stalin ordered the suspension of Superintendent of Police Samay Singh Meena and the transfer of Collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath.
  • A CB-CID probe has been initiated.
  • Chief Minister’s Statement:CM Stalin expressed shock and sadness over the deaths.
  • He assured that those responsible have been arrested and urged the public to report such crimes for immediate action.
  • Victims and Treatment:Over 66 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals.
  • 17 referred to JIPMER, Puducherry; eight to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem; four to Villupuram Medical College Hospital.
  • Symptoms included loss of breath, blurred vision, giddiness, and diarrhoea.
  • Public Reaction:Relatives gathered in large numbers at the hospital premises.
  • Political Reaction:AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami accused the DMK government of failing to control the sale of spurious liquor and illicit arrack.
  • He urged the state machinery to address this issue and the drug menace strictly.
