HOUSEHOLDS FAVORED PROCESSED FOOD; HARYANA, RAJASTHAN PRIORITIZED MILK EXPENDITURE

Why in the news?

  • Households in both rural and urban areas spent the most on beverages, refreshments, and processed food in 2022-23.
  • Food accounted for 39% of average monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE).

About Household Consumption Expenditure Survey:

  • Conducted by:National Statistical Office (NSO) every five years.
  • Purpose: Estimates household Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) for rural and urban areas, States, UTs, and socio-economic groups.
  • Significance: Reviews GDP, poverty levels, and Consumer Price Inflation (CPI).
About National Statistical Office:

  • Formed: 2019, merging CSO and NSSO.
  • Suggestion: Proposed by C. Rangarajan Committee.
  • Affiliation: Under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
  • Function: Collects, compiles, and disseminates reliable, objective, and relevant statistical data.
