Why in the news?

Ireland, Norway, and Spain announced plans to formally recognise Palestine, following a recent UN vote supporting Palestine’s full membership.
Israel reacted by recalling ambassadors from these countries amid ongoing conflicts and international legal actions against its leaders.

About United Nations General Assembly (UNGA):

Principal Component of the UN: Main governing and most representative body.
Membership: 193 members (all UN member countries).
Meetings:Annual meetings in September at the UN headquarters in New York City.
Leadership: Headed by a President elected for a one-year term.
No veto power, unlike the Security Council.
In 1953, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit became the eighth President of the UNGA, the only Indian to hold this position to date.
