Why in the news?

  • Ireland, Norway, and Spain announced plans to formally recognise Palestine, following a recent UN vote supporting Palestine’s full membership.
  • Israel reacted by recalling ambassadors from these countries amid ongoing conflicts and international legal actions against its leaders.

About United Nations General Assembly (UNGA):

  • Principal Component of the UN: Main governing and most representative body.
  • Membership: 193 members (all UN member countries).
  • Meetings:Annual meetings in September at the UN headquarters in New York City.
  • Leadership: Headed by a President elected for a one-year term.
  • No veto power, unlike the Security Council.
  • In 1953, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit became the eighth President of the UNGA, the only Indian to hold this position to date.
