IMD ANNOUNCES SOUTHWEST MONSOON ONSET OVER NICOBAR ISLANDS

Why in the news?

  • Southwest monsoon makes onset over Nicobar Islands, southern Bay of Bengal, and South Andaman Sea.
  • IMD issues yellow alerts over Andamans due to increased cloudiness and reduced Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR).

About  Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR):

  • Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) is emitted to space from Earth’s atmosphere.
  • Plays a crucial role in planetary cooling.
  • Spans wavelengths from 3–100 microns.
  • Less than 1% of sunlight exceeds 4 μm wavelength.
