Why in the news?

Mount Ibu’s eruption in Indonesia, spewing a 5 km ash tower, follows a raised alert level, yet causes no immediate harm.

About Ibu Volcano:

  • Location: Situated in the Maluku Islands, East Indonesia, on the island of Halmahera
  • Isolation: Among the most isolated and least accessible volcanoes in Indonesia
  • Height: Stands at 1,377 metres above sea level
  • Type: Stratovolcano (composite volcano) with steep slopes and explosive eruptions
  • Shape: Symmetrical cone with a prominent crater at the summit.
