About the Concerns Raised by Population Foundation of India (PFI):

  • The PFI expressed deep concern over media misrepresentations of data from the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister’s (EAC-PM) working paper.
  • It criticised the inaccurate portrayal of findings to create alarm regarding the growth of the Muslim population.
  • PFI referenced census data and National Family Health Surveys to demonstrate declining growth rates among Muslims in India.
  • The working paper titled “Share of religious minorities: a cross-country analysis (1950-2015)” analysed the shares of religious communities in 167 countries, including India.
  • It revealed that while the Muslim population in India increased by 43.15% from 1950 to 2015, the Hindu population share decreased by 7.82%.
About Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM):

  • Independent body advising the Indian Government on economic matters, established in September 2017 for a two-year term.
  • Advises the Prime Minister on economic issues referred to it, addressing macroeconomic concerns.
  • Comprises a Chairperson and eminent economists as members, supported by officials and administrators.
