FOREST DEPARTMENT AWAITS MINISTRY APPROVAL TO TRANQUILLISE TADOBA-ANDHARI TIGERS FOR RELOCATION

Why in the news?

Tigers relocation from Tadoba-Andhari to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve aims to bolster tiger numbers and conservation efforts.

About Forest Department’s Tiger Translocation Plan:

  • Objective: Maharashtra Forest Department plans to translocate tigers from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) to boost tiger population.
  • Process: Waiting for Environment Ministry’s nod to tranquilize tigers in TATR for safe translocation. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has already approved the plan in October 2023.
  • Significance: STR, formed in 2010, aims to revive tiger population in the Western Ghats corridor. Initial phase involves translocation of male tigers to STR, followed by females, to bolster tiger numbers in the region.
About Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR):

●   Location: Situated in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district.

●   Size: Covers 625.4 sq. km, including Tadoba National Park (116.55 sq. km) and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary (508.85 sq. km).

●   Name Origin: “Tadoba” from local god, “Andhari” from Andhari River.

●   Corridor: Connected to Nagzira-Navegaon and Pench Tiger Reserves.

●   Habitat: Falls in the Central plateau province, rich in biodiversity.

●   Vegetation: Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous, teak trees, crocodile bark, salai, etc.

●   Water Bodies: Tadoba Lake, Kolsa Lake, and Tadoba River.

●   Flora: Dense forests with teak trees, grass patches, bamboo shrubs.

●   Fauna: Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, gaurs, chitals, sambars, diverse bird and reptile species.
