About the Withdrawal of Troops:

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel from Manipur.
  • These troops were deployed in response to ethnic violence that erupted in the state on May 3, 2023.
  • The withdrawal comes ahead of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April 19 and 26 in the violence-affected state.
Understanding The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) :

➢    The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in India, overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs, comprise seven security forces:

➢    Assam Rifles (AR)

➢    Border Security Force (BSF)

➢    Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)

➢    Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

➢    Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

➢    National Security Guard (NSG)

➢    Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

➢    These forces have their cadre of officers, but they are led by officers from the Indian Police Service.
