About the Infrastructure Development:

  • Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar unveiled a new 350-metre-long pier for Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and residential accommodations at Naval Base, Karwar.
  • These additions are part of Phase IIA of Project Seabird aimed at expanding the naval base to accommodate a larger fleet and enhance operational capabilities.
  • Project Seabird encompasses various developments including berths for ships and submarines, a naval air station, a dockyard, covered dry berths, and logistics support facilities.
What is Project Seabird?

  • Project Seabird: India’s largest naval infrastructure project.
  • Aim: Creation of a naval base at Karwar, Karnataka.
  • History: Conceived in the 1980s by Admiral OS Dawson.
  • Sanctioned in 1985; foundation stone laid in 1986 by Rajiv Gandhi.

About INS Kadamba:

  • Third largest Naval Base in India.
