  • India abstained from a Human Rights Council (HRC) resolution urging an immediate Gaza ceasefire and implementing an arms embargo on Israel.
  • It aligned with past stances on HRC resolutions focusing on “accountability.”
  • However, India supported three other resolutions condemning Israel for human rights violations against Palestinians, its occupation of Syrian Golan, and advocating for Palestinian self-determination.

About the Human Rights Council (HRC):

●   HRC is a UN body aiming to enhance human rights worldwide.

●   Created in 2006, it replaced the former UN Commission on Human Rights.

●   OHCHR in Geneva serves as its Secretariat.

Membership of the HRC:

●   Consists of 47 UN Member States elected by the UN General Assembly.

●   Selection criteria include states’ human rights contributions and voluntary pledges.
