New air travel rules enable passengers to undergo security checks at boarding gates, easing delays and improving convenience.

About the Reforms:

  • Long delays, often due to weather or technical issues, have led to passengers being confined within aircraft for up to 12 hours.
  • The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) introduces new standard operating protocols (SOPs) for airports and airlines to address this issue.
  • Passengers who have deplaned can now undergo security checks at the boarding gate itself, rather than returning to the arrivals section and re-entering security queues.
About The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS):

●   BCAS was established in January 1978 within the Directorate General of Civil Aviation post Indian Airlines hijacking in 1976.

●   Became independent department under the Ministry of Civil Aviation in April 1987.

●   Aims to safeguard civil aviation against unlawful interference.

●   Responsibilities include setting security standards at Indian airports.

●   Headed by an officer of Director General of Police rank, designated as Commissioner of Security.

●   Headquarters located in New Delhi.

●   Four Regional Offices situated at major international airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
