THE NEED TO CURB BLACK CARBON EMISSIONS:

Why in the news?

India’s efforts to curb black carbon emissions through initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana are highlighted for environmental and health concerns.Uderstanding Black Carbon:

  • Black carbon, emitted during incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, contributes to global warming and health risks.
  • India’s residential sector, notably from traditional cookstoves burning biomass, is the largest contributor of black carbon emissions.
What is Black Carbon?

  • Black Carbon (BC) is a short-lived pollutant.
  • It ranks as the second-largest contributor to global warming after CO2.
