PM INAUGURATES COUNTRY’S CENTRE EXTENDS UJJWALA SUBSIDY TILL FY25, DA HIKED TO 50% OF BASIC SALARY

Why in the news?

Ujjwala subsidy extension, DA hike, and Northeast industrial development scheme announced by the Union Cabinet, impacting the economy and beneficiaries.

Extension of Ujjwala Subsidy:

  • Ujjwala subsidy extended for PMUY beneficiaries till FY 2024-25.
  • Subsidy covers 12 refills/year, costing Rs 12,000 crore.
  • DA for central govt. staff increased by 4%, reaching 50% of basic pay/pension.
  • Increase in DA, gratuity, and house rent allowance to cost Rs 124,000 crore from Jan 2024 to Feb 2025.
About Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY):

●  Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) provides clean cooking fuel, LPG, to rural and deprived households.

●  Objectives: Empower women, reduce deaths from unclean fuel, prevent respiratory illnesses.

●  Features: Rs 1600 financial support per LPG connection, deposit-free connections, first refill, and hotplate provided free of cost under Ujjwala 2.0.

●  Benefits: Free LPG connection, subsidy on first six refills, EMI facility for stove, direct subsidy transfer through PAHAL scheme.

●   Fossil Fuel Subsidies: Subsidies on fossil fuels like LPG and kerosene ensure energy access and affordability for vulnerable populations.

●   Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY): Launched by the Indian government to promote LPG usage, aiming to reduce air pollution, deforestation, and associated health issues.
