Why in the news?
Maharashtra Assembly passed a 10% reservation Bill for Marathas in education and government jobs, facing scrutiny for judicial compliance.
Key Features of the Bill:
- Bill does not affect the existing OBC quota; non-Kunbi Marathas are eligible under the new law.
- Based on a report by Justice (retired) Sunil B Shukre-led commission, citing “exceptional circumstances” to justify reservation beyond the 50% limit.
- The Supreme Court struck down previous quota laws, citing lack of “exceptional circumstances” to breach the 50% reservation cap.
