Why in the news?

Proposal for Women’s Urban Employment Guarantee Act (WUEGA):

  • Advocates propose a national WUEGA with at least 50% women in management.
  • Key features include childcare facilities at worksites, free public transport for women, and works within a 5-km radius.
Highlighting schemes for welfare of women:

●   SwadharGreh Scheme: Provides shelter, food, counselling, and training for women in difficult circumstances.

●   One Stop Centres (OSCs): Offer integrated services for women affected by violence.

●   Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY-G & PMAY-U): Aims to provide housing for rural and urban households.

●   National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) provides financial support to senior citizens, widows, and disabled persons.

●   Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) mandates job allocation for women in rural areas.

●   Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) ensures old-age protection for unorganised workers, including women.
