SC TO CENTRE: ENSURE WOMEN GET PERMANENT COMMISSION IN COAST GUARD OR WE WILL
Why in the news?
- The Supreme Court directed the Centre to ensure that women are granted permanent commission in the Indian Coast Guard.
- Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud asserted that women cannot be left out and threatened court intervention if the government fails to act.

- Dismissal of government’s stance on service years determining eligibility.
- Equality in grant of permanent commission in 10 streams of combat support arms and services.
- Women officers eligible for command posts in non-combat areas, subject to Army’s discretion on a case-by-case basis.
