Inter-State River Water Disputes in India

·    Inter-State River Water Disputes pose significant challenges within Indian federalism.

·    Examples include the Krishna Water Dispute, Cauvery Water Dispute, and Satluj Yamuna Link Canal issue.

Constitutional Provisions:

·    State List (Entry 17) covers water-related matters, while Union List (Entry 56) empowers the Union Government to regulate inter-state rivers.

·    Article 262 allows Parliament to adjudicate disputes over inter-state river waters and prohibits judicial intervention.

Acts related to Water dispute:

·    River Boards Act, 1956: Enables GoI to form interstate river boards, but none exist.

·    Inter-State Water Dispute Act, 1956: Permits states to request tribunal formation, with one-year setup and three-year decision deadlines.
