WHY DID KOSOVO FACE DELAYS IN SCHENGEN APPROVAL?

Why in the news?

Kosovo recently gained visa-free access to the Schengen zone, the world’s largest free movement area, marking a significant milestone.

The Schengen zone area:

  • The zone is known after Schengen, the tiny Luxembourg village bordering France and Germany.
  • Currently, it is an area encompassing 27 European countries that have officially abolished border controls at their mutual borders.
The Schengen Agreement

●    Formation: Established by the Schengen Agreement signed in 1985 in the village of Schengen, Luxembourg.

●    Membership: Initially signed by five of the six founding members of the European Union, excluding Italy. It now includes 27 European countries.

●    Recent Developments: Croatia joined Schengen in 2023, while Romania and Bulgaria are set to gain partial entry from March 31, 2024.
