MSP ISSUE: WHAT GOVT COMMITTEE SET UP IN 2022 HAS DONE SO FAR

Why in the news?

  • Establishment of Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) Committee in 2022 by the government.
  • Objective: Address societal challenges through collaboration among government, private sector, and civil society.

About Committee on MSP Issue:

  • Shanta Kumar Committee 2015:

Only 6% farmers received MSP ,Implies 94% farmers not benefited.

  • Sanjay Agrawal Committee 2022.
  • Aims to enhance transparency and effectiveness of MSP.
  • Tasked with promoting zero-budget farming and recommending changes in crop patterns.

What is MSP?

  • MSP is the price at which the government procures farmers’ produce during the season.
  • Farmers have the choice to sell to government agencies or in the open market
  • Calculation:MSP set at least 1.5 times the cost of production.
The Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP):

●    The Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) recommends MSPs for 22 crops, including Kharif, Rabi, and commercial crops, based on various factors.

The National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA)

●    Aims to provide subsidized food grains to two-thirds of India’s population.

●    Enacted on12 September 2013, retroactive from 5 July 2013.
