• The Aadi Mahotsav 2024, an annual National Tribal Festival, will be opened by President Droupadi Murmu on 10 January, 2024 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

About the Event

• The event, organised by TRIFED on behalf of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs which will run until the 18th February, 2024 of this month and will highlight the rich diversity of India’s tribal heritage;
• The festival will include an expanded showcase with over 300 stalls offering a varied display of tribal art, handicrafts, natural produce, and delicious tribal cuisine.

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED)

• About the Organization:
  • TRIFED was established in 1987 and it is an apex organization at the national level that is managed by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs;
  • The purpose of TRIFED is to promote the socioeconomic development of the nation’s indigenous people through the marketing of their traditional goods, which account for a significant amount of their income and include metalworking, weaving, ceramics, paintings, and pottery;
  • TRIFED facilitates and offers services to tribes so they can market and sell their goods and also it provide tribal people with information, tools, and knowledge so they can conduct their operations in a more methodical and scientific way;
  • Additionally, it entails empowering the tribal people by forming Self Help Groups (SHGs), raising their level of awareness, and providing training so they can carry out specific tasks;
  • There are thirteen regional offices spread across the nation, with TRIFED’s head office situated in New Delhi.
• Functions of TRIFED: Its primary responsibilities are the development of minor forest products (MFPs) and retail marketing and development.
  • Development of Minor Forest Produce (MFP):
    • Non-timber forest products, or “Minor Forest Produce (MFP),” are a significant source of income for tribal people. All non-timber forest products originating from plants are included in this, such as bamboo, canes, fodder, leaves, gums, waxes, dyes, resins, and a variety of edibles like nuts, wild fruits, honey, lac, tusser, etc.;
    • For those who live in or close to forests, minor forest products provide a source of cash income in addition to subsistence. They contribute significantly to their food, fruits, medications, and other consumables. They also generate revenue through sales.
  • Retail Marketing & Development:
    • By developing a sustainable market and giving tribal members access to business opportunities, TRIFED seeks to enhance the standard of living in tribal communities;
    • It entails developing a brand, offering other essential services, and investigating marketing opportunities for the sustainable marketing of indigenous products;
    • It finds and sources tribal products for marketing through its retail marketing network of TRIBES INDIA outlets through a network of 13 regional offices spread across the nation;
    • It has been procuring a range of natural and food products, handicrafts, and handloom items from its accredited suppliers throughout the nation.

About Tribes in India

• What are tribes? A tribe is a social group that shares a common social structure, unique identity, dialect, and cultural homogeneity and it might have a common ancestor and ruling deities, as well as a number of sub-groups like siblings or villages. Their small communities or families are bound together by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, like kingship bondage.
• Tribes in India:
  • Indian tribes, also known as Adivasis, make up a sizable portion of the country’s population and they are the second-biggest tribal community in the world;
  • Tribal communities, whose distinctive lifestyles and customs have made them an integral part of Indian society since the time of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are rich in traditions, cultures, and heritage;
  • The tribes in India are in general live in the isolated areas like hills, forests, and deserts.
• The Size of Indian Tribe Populations:
  • Roughly 10.4 crore people, or6% of India’s total population, are members of Scheduled Tribes (ST) and under the Indian Constitution’s Article 342, more than 730 Scheduled Tribes have received notifications;
  • 10% of them reside in cities, and the other 97% are rural residents;
  • The 2011 Census indicates that Madhya Pradesh is the Indian state with the largest tribal population and Bhil tribe is the largest tribe in India.
  • In the general population, there are 940 females for every 1000 males, whereas in Scheduled Tribes, the ratio is 990 females for every 1,000 males.
• PVTGs (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups):
  • In 1973, the Dhebar Commission established Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) as a distinct category of tribal groups that were less developed. The Indian government renamed the PTGs as PVTGs in 2006;
  • Out of the 705 Scheduled Tribes, there are currently 75 PVTGs in India. Odisha has the highest number of PVTGs out of the 75 listed;
  • PVTGs share a number of fundamental traits, such as being largely homogeneous, having a small population, being physically isolated, not having written language, having relatively simple technology, changing at a slower pace, etc.

About Major Dhyan Chand

• Major Dhyan Chand was a field hockey player who competed internationally from 1926 to 1949 and had won three gold medals at the Olympics, in 1928, 1932, and 1936;
• He was dubbed the “magician of hockey” due to his extraordinary abilities in the sport and got recognition in 1934 when he was named captain of the Indian squad;
• In 1956, Major Dhyan Chand received the Padma Bhushan after retiring from the army as a Major;
• National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29th in India every year to honor and celebrate the birthday of Dhyan Chand and it is also called National Sports Day of India or Rashtriya Khel Divas;
• Honors given in memory of Major Dhyan Chand:
  • The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and it is India’s highest sporting honor;
  • The highest award for lifetime achievement in sports is the Dhyan Chand Award.
