CANCER STATISTICS IN INDIA

Why in the News?

  • India witnessed over 14 lakh new cancer cases and more than 9 lakh deaths in 2022, as per the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the WHO.

Cancer Trends in India:

  • Breast and cervix cancers were predominant among Indian women, comprising around 27% and 18% of new cases respectively.
  • Common cancers among men included lip, oral cavity, and lung cancers, constituting 15.6%, 8.5%, and 12.4% of new cases respectively.
  • In India, the lifetime risk of developing cancer before 75 is 10.6%, with a 7.2% risk of cancer-related death by the same age.

  • WHO forecasts over 35 million new cancer cases globally by 2050, a 77% surge from 2022.
  • Factors:Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, obesity, and population ageing contribute to rising cancer rates.
  • Lung cancer tops global new cases (12.4%) and remains the leading cause of cancer death, accounting for nearly 19% of total cancer-related deaths.
