• In the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy’s warship INS Sumitra successfully completed a second anti-piracy operation, saving 19 crew members and a vessel from armed Somali pirates.

About the operation

• The Indian Navy said that the INS Sumitra stopped the attempted piracy on the FV Iman off the coast of Somalia’s east, saving the fishing boat Al Naeemi and 19 Pakistani citizens from 11 Somali pirates;
• The operation was conducted following the successful rescue of the Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Iman from Somali pirates by the INS Sumitra;
• The INS Sumitra employed seventeen crew members to combat pirate activity in the Gulf of Aden and along Somalia’s east coast;
• According to the Indian Navy, the pirates were forced to release the crew and the boat safely after their warship, INS Sumitra, intercepted the vessel and followed established standard operating procedures;
• The Indian Navy warship that was deployed in the Southern Arabian Sea, about 850 nautical miles west of Kochi, made quick, unrelenting efforts to rescue the hijacked vessels.

About the Indian Navy

• The East India Company founded a maritime force in the seventeenth century, laying the groundwork for the modern Indian Navy, which graduated in time to the Royal Indian Navy’s establishment in 1934;
• The Chief of the Naval Staff, an Admiral, is in charge of the Indian Navy’s Headquarters, which is situated in New Delhi;
• There are three area commands that oversee the Indian navy, and each one is led by a flag officer;
• The Eastern Naval Command is located in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on the Bay of Bengal; the Southern Naval Command is located in Kochi (Cochin), in Kerala, also on the Arabian Sea; and the Western Naval Command is headquartered in Bombay, on the Arabian Sea;

About INS Sumitra

• The Indian Navy’s fourth and final patrol boat of the Saryu class is INS Sumitra and Goa Shipyard Limited built it using an indigenous design. It is based in Chennai under the Eastern Naval Command and was put into service in 2014;
• Primary Roles: Apart from performing anti-piracy patrols, fleet support operations, maritime security of offshore assets, and escort operations, the ship’s main duty is to monitor the nation’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ);
• Important Features:
  • The ship has dimensions of approximately 105 meters by 13 meters for width and length, and it can move 2,200 tons at a speed of 25 knots;
  • The vessel is capable of 6,500 nautical miles of range and it is being powered by two diesel engines;
  • The ship is equipped with the newest navigation and early warning radars, close-quarters weapon systems, and a 76.2 mm gun mounted on a super rapid gun mount;
  • It has the capacity to load a single Dhruv/Chetak helicopter and it has two stiff inflatable fast-motor boats installed.
• About Saryu class ships:
  • The Indian Navy’s advanced patrol ships, known as offshore patrol vessels (OPV) of the Saryu class, are constructed at the Goa Shipyard Limited;
  • These ships are able to keep control of shipping lanes and conduct monitoring and surveillance in the ocean;
  • They can also be used to guard other naval assets and offshore oil installations;
  • OFFSHORE VESSEL PATROL:
    • An offshore patrol vessel is a very adaptable vessel that is intended to carry out economic exclusion zone management tasks, such as providing coastal areas with maritime security and efficient disaster relief;
    • They can be used in river (“brown water”), estuary (“green water”), or marine (“blue water”) environments, and they can be run by the coast guard, police, navy, or customs department of a country.

About Gulf of Aden

• Nestled between the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula, it is an extension of the Indian Ocean;
• The port city of “Aden” on Yemen’s coast is the source of the gulf’s name;
• Its borders are as follows: Yemen to the north, the Arabian Sea to the east, Djibouti to the west, and Somalia and the Socotra Islands (a portion of Yemen) to the south;
• The Guardafui Channel connects the gulf to the Somali Sea to the south, and the Strait of Bab el Mandeb connects it to the Red Sea to the west;
• Stretching along the middle of the gulf, the Sheba Ridge is the main relief feature of the terrain. It is an extension of the Indian Ocean ridge system.
